- Zombies rule the night
"We were very pleased with the crowd," said Mrs. Furr. She said an estimated $1,000 was raised for the museum.
The zombie event for children was held from 6-8 p.m. and 8:30-10 p.m. for the zombie walk and dance. Children who came at 5 p.m. had their faces painted just like zombies or other characters, said Mrs. Furr.
Around 100 children and their parents came early for the games and mini ghost tour portion from 6-8 p.m.
Children's games included zombie train toss, zombie bingo, zombie pong, mummy bowling, halloween bingo for kids bingo and more. Prizes were awarded for each game's winners.
Particularly popular, said Mrs. Furr, was the mini ghost tours. The smaller version of the regular ghost tours, sponsored by the Heritage Museum, included stops at the Old Wilkes Jail and the Ben Cleveland House.
Vendors lined the area used for the farmers market and Bridge Street. They sold or provided a variety of services including crafts and food. The Haunted Wilkes Group and the Haunted Forsyth Group provided information, as well as the Wilkes County Library.
The zombie walk started around 8:30 p.m. The crowd of frightening zombies followed a hearse from the Carolina Coffin Cruisers Club, down Main Street, Wilkesboro toward town hall. Following them was an ambulance from the "Zombie Response Team."
Trophies were given for best costumes, best true character, best zombie dancer, best groan and best zombie injury.
The event ended with a Zombie Dance with people dancing to "Thriller."
Also the final film in the Town of Wilkesboro's Outdoor Movie Series, "ParaNorman," was shown in the town park.
